Prof. Steven W.M. Olde Damink
is a Professor of Surgery at Maastricht University and Maastricht University Medical Centre+, where he also serves as Director of the Research Laboratories within the Department of Surgery. Since 2023, he additionally serves as Professor of Surgery at the Duisburg‑Essen University, Germany to advise on the development of a Translational Surgical Oncology research program.
He is a board‑certified gastrointestinal surgeon and surgeon‑oncologist with a strong clinical focus on hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgery, complex surgical complications, and the nutritional and metabolic care of metabolically compromised patients. His clinical career includes extensive international experience, with academic and consultant positions in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Prof. Olde Damink’s research is internationally recognized and centers on translational and clinical research of the gut–liver axis, liver regeneration, tumour metabolism, and cancer cachexia. He has authored more than 290 peer‑reviewed scientific publications, contributes actively to international collaborations, and is deeply involved in mentoring the next generation of clinician‑scientists.
