Prof. Arthur R.H. van Zanten, MD, PHD
is an internist-intensivist and Chair of ICU Research at Gelderse Vallei Hospital in Ede, The Netherlands, and Professor of Nutrition and Metabolic Stress at Wageningen University & Research.
He currently serves as President of the Netherlands Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (NESPEN) and Vice-Chair of the Global Research Initiative on Post-ICU Nutrition (GRIP). From 2023 to 2025, he chaired the Feeding, Rehabilitation, Endocrinology and Metabolism (FREM) Section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).
Prof. van Zanten has held several editorial leadership roles in the field of clinical nutrition. Since May 2026, he has served as Editor-in-Chief ad interim of Clinical Nutrition, following his previous appointment as Associate Editor. He additionally serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Intensive Medicine and Critical Care.
His research focuses on personalised nutrition in critical illness, with particular expertise in protein and energy provision, metabolic stress, muscle preservation, refeeding syndrome, and post-ICU recovery. He is also a leading advocate for sustainable nutrition practices in intensive care, including the exploration of plant-based nutritional strategies.
With more than 280 peer-reviewed publications, an H-index of 58, and over 17,000 citations, Prof. van Zanten has made substantial contributions to the advancement of clinical nutrition and critical care medicine. He has co-authored international ESPEN guidelines in critical care and cardiology nutrition and has delivered more than 650 invited lectures across 38 countries.
Recognised internationally as a leading authority in clinical nutrition and critical care, Prof. van Zanten is consistently ranked among the world's top scholars in Clinical Nutrition and continues to shape research, clinical practice, and education on a global scale.
